Handcrafted, abstract and weathered.
Rugged landscapes, natural textures, aged patinas and earthy tones are the foundations of inspiration for my art.
Based in the Northern Grampians, my studio sits in a Valley amongst dry woodlands with mountainous views where I make purely decorative and only partially functional ceramics and paintings/prints that showcase the raw beauty of our untamed bushland.
My work is about connections with nature and people, depicting imprints and impressions of encounters that have lasting impact. In a physical sense the visual texture of each piece calls you in to look closer, feel the fired earth and discover new smokey impressions at every glance. On an emotional level I aim to create a sense of thought on how our seemingly small actions can leave a lasting mark on both people and our surrounds.
The alternative firing techniques used is a collaboration between artist and chance which enables a letting go of expectations. There is no real way to predict the final outcome so every time I open a sagger or the pit it's like opening a present. It's a gift from the kiln.
